They don’t yet know each other intimately; what type of relationship the other wants to have, what they expect from each other, what boundaries they need the other to respect. Do you HAVE to have all that figured out before sex and not after? No, but there’s something to be said for learning about where your partner’s boundaries are by asking first instead of bumping into them directly.
