My region uses lockable sturdy green bins for disposal of food scraps and kitchen waste, to keep racoons and the like from tearing their way into the food (compost heaps was the old solution, but the region ended up with a overpopulated rat problem instead). When we got cats, we had to bring a spare green bin into our kitchen. Turns out cats are just as happy to rip their way through a garbage can after a chicken carcass as a raccoon is. Raccoons, on the other hand, don’t hide their tasty finds under my bed. -_-
