So sunblock SPF ratings are interesting. Intuitively, More Number is More Blocker. But the actual meaning is that the SPF Number is the denominator of the inverse of how much UV is not blocked. SPF 30 blocks UV but still lets through 1/30 of the rays. SPF 50 lets through 1/50. This is why you generally only see SPFs 30-50, as the higher SPF is increasingly diminished protection, and lower SPFs are increasingly pointless. Sunscreens are required to have a shelf life of at least three years, but it doesn’t hurt to have a fresh bottle.
Always read and follow the instructions of the sunscreen. Typically sunscreen needs 20-30 minutes to ‘set’ and may not provide the rated protection before that. And even ‘waterproof’ sunscreen should be re-applied often when exposed to water or sweat.
Of course, always get sunscreen rated for both UV-A and UV-B radiation.
Always use sunscreen or protective garments when outdoors or semi-outdoors, such as if you’re in the shade adjacent to the beach. Scattered UV radiation reflecting off buildings and water can and will still burn you.
And if you’re like me, always wash it off completely when you you’re done being outside, or it will irritate your skin.

But that makes it linear with exposure time. If it lets through 1/30th of the UV, you’re good for 30 times as long to get the same dose, 150th, 50 times as long. And the time to burn, for most people, without sunscreen, is around 15 minutes. Since 15minutes*50 is 12.5 hours, that will cover you for a full day in the sun. That’s why it stops there.
(Although yes, that assumes its reapplied as required).
Sure, though I would hesitate to frame it like that because there’s no standard time for how long it takes to burn (even if there is an average time). Being able to say, ‘this blocks 98% of the UV we shine at it’ is quantifiable. I worry it might breed complacency about re-applying as needed if there’s conflation with ‘how long it takes to burn’ with ‘how long the sunscreen lasts’. All else being equal, sunscreens will start to break down and lose efficacy around the same time regardless of their SPF.
I always go for the highest I SPF can get if I’m going to be out for any real length of time. I do wonder if it’s a practical, marketing, or legal reason (possibly all three) to not really go higher than SPF 50, which is blocking 98% of UV. No one’s going to market “100% blocking” and open themselves up to lawsuits over it Getting closer to 100% involves increasingly silly numbers (SPF 100 would block 99% of UV, only 1% more than 50 and now you will have people deciding that it means 100% and you’re dealing with angry customers again) and it’s plausible that the formulations you need to get to those numbers would make the sunblock unpleasant to use.

Something I truly appreciate here: just letting the older lady be… an OLDER lady. She’s not a horror show, but she’s also got some middle flab, her boobs aren’t perfectly perky, her skin has more notes and marks, but she is still kinda hot. But it’s old lady hot.
So much media just makes these kinds of characters specters on the narrative, just ghostly beings never meant for any kind of material change, or they make them 30/40 yr olds with white/grey hair.
I love the relationship Steven and Gary have. Like, obviously Steven is basically telepathically linked to Tara, and may as well be her familiar, but Steven also clearly enjoys time with “grandpa,” too. And Gary is such a chill guy that “accidentally” going on wild Steven adventures is just something he rolls with.
