Haunted by the Past #11

  1. What a massive management failure. I mean, who’d let a new (and slightly daft) recruit go on a job alone (unless they wanted him to die, which clearly they didn’t)

    1. I mean, to be fair, the job was basically “Hey, go here and pick up this kid, all the paperwork is already in order.”
They handed Simon an easy job, the fuckups were all on him.

      1. Yeah, but the fuckup was “bringing a date to a nice hotel”. If his employers didn’t tell him of leylines or succubi, how is any of this on him?

        1. No, the fuckup was ā€œbringing a date to a location where you’re supposed to carry out a specific job a day before that job.ā€ He was specifically ordered to go on a specific day, and he deliberately chose the day before that day to fool around

Unless they gave him permission to bring his date— who isn’t involved with the government at all— to pick up the child, then I’m willing to say ā€œyeah, they should’ve seen that comingā€

They shouldn’t need to tell this guy what I assume is classified info to take his very simple job seriously/not fuck around. And the job itself is unusual; ā€œHey, pick up this kid at this hotel., paperwork’s all handled, bring her to usā€

So, the government essentially adopted this child and he didn’t automatically raise an eyebrow upon getting the mission and think ā€œsounds like an important job, why would the government go pick up this specific kid?ā€

I mean, he had the sense to ask for details about the dogs, so obviously he can use his brain. Having the foresight to ask about dogs with weird properties isn’t a huge step above acknowledging how weird your assignment is and figuring ā€œHey, maybe I SHOULDN’T fool around here with my dateā€

The fact that they ran experiments on this kid makes me think for sure they didn’t tell him everything, why would they tell the new hire that kinda info? I’m sure the average Joe would have issues with a child being experimented on, it would be an unnecessary risk on them if he went and exposed everything

And this is assuming that he didn’t know ANYTHING beyond ā€œpick up this kidā€ he might’ve known the hotel was built in an area that had strange stuff happen.

        2. …Because he brought his date *on an official mission*, and went there a day ahead of schedule specifically so he could spend the night there with her.

        3. I feel like “Don’t take a date and bang while on a secret government mission” is just basic professional etiquette

      2. Wherein the business itself was known to be supernatural to some degree. If this was a regular house with a regular kid, it’d be fine, but if the purpose of the department is to research supernatural effects, they definitely should have given him an experienced partner, solely so he doesn’t do anything terminally stupid due to not knowing anything supernatural

  2. How this ends with the Halloween specials continuing, I’m not sure.

Teresa doesn’t even seem like she has any will to keep going anymore

    1. Honestly, it’ll probably her coming to visit Sarah. They’ll probably bond over not wanting anything to do with Simon.

  3. Damm……that is all I got damm.

  4. Damn. Gets used as a test subject for half her life, gets her succubus role reduced to capitalism and unionized by Steven, and ends up being homeless. Give our girl a win Nort please.

    1. Only breaks that girl.has gotten have been her heart, self worth, and mental health. She deserves a little goid luck and maybe the flayed genitals and still warm.livers of Simon and the rest of his crew

      1. Still not letting go of the whole child slavery, ethics-free medical experiments, and attempted murder of a minor thing.

        1. I don’t think anyone would blame you. Or her, for that matter. I know I don’t…

  5. The fight is over….but where is Steven?

  6. Teresa needs a puppy.

  7. Oof… Teresa’s looking like she needs a stiff drink, a hug, and a nap.

  8. Jeez I feel bad for her. She had her whole life screwed up and all she deserves some happiness. Give her a happy ending Nort!

    1. I mean. I would. Glady.

  9. The last panel makes me sad šŸ™

  10. This place has definitely gotten pretty bad since last we saw it.
Also like everyone else, I sorta feel bad for Teresa here

  11. Teresa, what’ve you done with Steven?

  12. Aw. I’m kinda sad now. This has been rough for Teresa.

  13. …so you’re saying Sarah was an accident.

  14. So Bevara isn’t listed <_< was I right? Was it Teresa narrating as her the while time?

  15. Found this comic a few days ago, now caught up to the present šŸ˜….
On that note: is the rss feed broken for anyone else? For me it is empty

    1. If you’re adding it manually, you need to do “/comic/feed/ after the url, not just /feed/

  16. Witch of many Jobs

I feel bad for her, she looks just so done in that last panel.

  17. she looks like she desperately needs a hug

  18. “The social worker being skeptical of the custody transfer because all the paperwork and approvals are in perfect order” and somehow people still think Nortverse is no longer a realism based comic

  19. A skeptical social worker might be less willing to hand over a child to a single man than to a heteronormative couple. It actually makes sense he brought a date along, from a secret government agency tradecraft perspective, especially as he didn’t tell her anything and never saw her again. He just used her for sex and a cover story.

  20. Any chance of Sara and her mother getting 18 years of child support out of him?

  21. I love how in the previous storyline he just seemed like a fine guy, but thru ought this whole thing Bravere here be like “this f-ing idiot, this absolute moron. This utter horny dumbass” makes me feel it’s almsot personal XD

  22. Gods. She looks like hell. She needs some coffee and a hug. And someone who will love and care for her.

  23. Oh, so he never even knew she was pregnant. No wonder he took a while to realize that was his daughter.
