yeah, this immidiately bugged me. leave that shit in situ, no matter if it’s for the cops or archeologists. if it’s been moved, it immidiately becomes almost useless
The place where I work is an active archaeological site with a collection of several million artifacts. A few are in the smithy. Why? Helpful visitors found them and brought them to the Ranger Station which gave the archaeology staff a Sad.
I mean, they’re already assuming he exists entirely off of “sightings,” so if you’ve already assumed he’s real, you’ve already accepted that at least some of the reports are true.
imo, at least the “sightings” involve seeing a photo and believing the photo is real – I don’t give that version much extra credit to be fair, but I’m pretty sure there’ve been way more people who’ve said wrong things in history than there’ve been faked photographs, just because photos haven’t been around as long

Especially if they cite “people online” as their source immediately after!
