The way I see it, if these two have a demonic tormentor who pays them a visit every year, someone must have decided they deserved a guardian angel to balance things out (and keep an eye on them in case they do something silly).

It will be revealed that Steven is not his name, but the race of Eldritch like beings who conquered demons eons ago and now just mingle peacefully. His name is something like 5z’T3¥€-N™.
I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that there’s no trace of Steven in the shelter’s archives before the day Bev and Tara were visiting, and that he just borfed his way, making them think that he was here since a long, undefined, time.
