There were varieties into the 60s that had latching handles, not magnetic seals. They weren’t universal, and they were mostly out of production by the 70s, I think, but our basement “backup” fridge was one into the 80s, maybe 90s. Those were the real risk.
Indeed. I have a cat that insists on jumping into the fridge at any opportunity (and we can’t drag him out without knocking over a lot of glass containers). The only reasonable way to get him out is to come back in a minute or two, open the door, and see if he’s had his fill yet. One time I got distracted and didn’t come back for a few minutes, and he pushed the door open just fine without me.
* It’s neither quite that cold to a thickly furred cat, nor is it a very small oxygen supply to an animal 1/20th the size of a human, so relax your animal activist instincts a bit. The little brat loves it in there.
